Remember Mystique? That nude or semi-nude super mutant portrayed by ... in Marvel's "The Avengers?" Rember Triad, that high-end home theater oriented brand, popular with direct sales by Higher Fi? Now here's the Mystique by Mojo Audio - topless - employing none lesser than a Triad transformer and no less than twenty two capacitors along with twenty smaller brethren. Our eyes were first drawn to the 1980's style chip socketing (fantastic) and layout and then to the rather beefy (far more than one would expect) power supply. Note also the surface-mounted (more modern) USB interface card mounted to the main audio board, the nice looking resistors (well soldered) and the thick surface traces almost resembling roadways for your sound. Of particular interest besides the quality of the work (great RCA mounting and fantastic IEC setup: the only wires inside) is the seven (7) op-amps flush-mounted to the side of the case, for heat dissipation.
If Mystique is the super villain, who is the super hero? Well, the most direct comparison would be to Burson.Remember Triad? Those home theater speakers that Higher Fi sold, currently carried by no less than Audio Perfection? Enter into the foray, Mojo Audio.

Tower of Power: Funk Audio Line Array Loudspeaker
If you're looking for home audio loudspeakers you basically have two options. The Steinway Lyingdorf Model LS (In Room) - $ USD and The Wisdom Audio LS-4 - $ USD. How about something a little less expensive?
Using what appears to be the inexpensive drivers of the Carver Amazing LS, the Funk Audio Line Array Loudspeaker ($15,675.00 CDN) and ... brings upper-echelon Craftsman balance into the cozy home.
On their own, the Funk Audio Line Array Pair brings 101 dB / watt efficiency and 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz frequency response (80 Hz recommend).
The 18.2 Subwoofer Pair ($18,920.00 CDN) brings 10 Hz and likely lower response extension.
At one time, we'll admit we owned Graphic Equalizers (GE).
If you want an equalizer (E), this isn't the one to get. You'll want something known as a Parametric Equalizer (PE). Failing that, should you not be working live-audio, you'll want something like the Cello Audio Palette or FM Acoustics FM-133 or FM-233 Harmonic Linearizer in your home.
One of the most inexpensive and popular Parametic Equilizer (PE) is the Behringer DCX-2496 UltraDrive Pro. It's used by Sanders in his 10C System.
Now let's look at the Funk Audio Subwoofer - 18.2 - Power Level 1 - $9,460.00 CDN on it's own.
It's frequency response, between 10 Hz and 200 Hz is not +/- 3 dB, but +/- 30 dB. Is EQ'ing a solution?
Of note is the Green Line (non ALO). Let's look at 80 Hz: With 100 dB playback, 1.99 dB of distortion would be reasonable and is the figure. How about 17.8 dB (20 Hz)? 31.6?
Would a Velodyne DD-18 Subwoofer Accelorometer circuit be useful in the 18.2 by Funk?

NuPrime uDSD DAC Review
Combining the convenience of the FiiO Olympus with the playback specifications of the iFi Nano iDSD along with the jacks of the fateful AudioEngine D1, NuPrime's uDSD only lacks a 1/4" jack to really give it clout.
What don't we like:

o No Power Input (USB Power Only)
o No 1/4" headphone jack (1/8" mini jack)

Run the Gauntlet
Is that a D-Premier in your pants? We have much to say about the Gamut D3i and D200i. Let's get into that now. The D3i by Gamut, if it's missing anything, it's a power button, but that's off to the left. You'll see a steadfast design ... a bit reminiscent of The Incredibles by Disney. If you read about it, some say it's all about architecture, as much as the D3i is about design. Now the D3i is very steadfast, yes, but it's also very trope. It exemplifies a pre-amplifer in it's specification. Disney's Incredibles was set in the 1960's, and there certainly very much is something 1940's to 1970's about the Gamut. We could say that it's without equalization, a DAC or a power-supply. That would make it hard to decry. What do we particuarly like? The top face-plate is amazing. From the logo to the venitlation design, it's on top. It's royal that the D200i shares that same top. You much more notice the power button on the D200i, how it's inset in the slot. So very Devialet. Yet, D-Premier. Like some nipples on some mojo Double-D's, the knobs on the D3i stick out, on top. So the pair is very much feminine. We can imagine, were it a robot, it would be carrying a cafeteria tray. Think of one of Bender's robotic love interests from Fox's Futurama, and you'll see what we are getting at. But let's go deeper, beyond the surface.
Let's talk about the Gamut D3i and D200i. Ignoring the techno-swavel, the pair look like something out of Dungeons & Dragons.
Assuming the D3i was a 3-sided dice, and the D200i was your bet, with 33% chance of loosing, 33% of drawing, and 33% of doubling.
The D200i uses a single pair of NPN MOSFET's for it's power amplification. NPN is Negative Positive Negative and is the most common type of bi-polar transistor. Operating at class A, it allows the D200i to pump out a not disrespect able 220 watts at 8 ohms. It will jump down to 400 watts, non-doubling, at 4. So we're not talking about schizophrenia when we talk about bi-polar here, nor Quadrophenia for the very matter. The D200i is strictly a stereo device.

The Audio Quest
Is The Audio Quest the equivalent of the quest for the Holy Grail?
At Sonor Filtronique (Rue Lajeunesse), they paired this water-themed Niagara (famous for honey moons) by AudioQuest with the also water-themed DCS stack.
In biblical reading, is the Holy Grail (the cup of everlasting life) equivalent to finding a wife? That is, finding progeny.
The Audio Quest is a similar fate accompli. Audiophiles will have no choice, but to accept, first concentrating on the power conditioning, and then, in component terms, moving on.
Many would also wish to consider Richard Grey's Power Station.

Bryston PowerPac Review
Many US readers - or Canadian Colbert Report viewers - are familiar with the Super PAC. But how about the PowerPac?
Should you have a basement loudspeaker - or bargain basement, like our own, the PowerPac 300 is appropriate. Should you have a refined product, the PowerPac 60 is entirely appropriate. Should you have an average home loudspeaker, the Bryston PowerPac120 is right about right.
Now let's talk about the screw. Politicians will say that they take the screw out of you, and into themselves, but they way you attach yourself a PowerPAC is via a screw - four, in fact - at the yore corners. Although you could conceivably come up with another mounting arrangement - bolts and nuts perhaps or just plain strictly cohesion setup, there's no shying away from screws here.
You're going to insert them deeply in your loudspeaker, so be sure you choose a Pro felt-covered model, or else a Black Ash varietal like our own Stratus to allow them to weld.
Keep out of water, and no arcs will comply.
Really pre-Class D amplification, there is no finer variety of amplification.
Who would want anything but Bryston and particularly the PowerPac - although the 28B SST3 is well-regarded, indeed. Given that 25-year warranty, that is.
In our listening, it pulled away from Classe driving the PSB Stratus Gold's to untold heights of imagination.
That is to say that the "lowly" Bryston 28B SST2 is an admirable partner for the Focal Grande Utopia III EM - a humble, $200,000.00 USD loudspeaker (or $400,000.00 CDN in Carbon and Grey).
Now the Bryston in the PowrePAC variety may not be able to raise funds for you, unless you be prosaically inclined.
It is however a very fine period piece of amplification.
You could not ask for a better pro-audio piece of amplification prior to the NCore current of Bruno Putzeys.
Let's give it to Paul Barton of PSB for making one very fine loudspeaker, and to ... of Bryston for making more than one very fine amp.
All three Brystons will give you untold very fine hours of audio.
Now our readership will bar us for saying very fine.
But Brystons, as objects of amplification, are very well-endowed. Not necessarily of current, nor of wattage, nor really of price, nor not of value, but of esteem.
And that, my friends is our finest estimation yt.

Going Tube: The Law of Diminished Opportunities
The sense of hearing diminishes with age. For those thinking of going tube, then, here are our suggestions.
1) BAT VK-75 SE (VK-150 SE Monoblock Amplifiers) - $10,500.00 CAD Commercial Electronics
2) Rogue Audio Chronus Magnum Integrated Amplifier - $2,195.00 USD
Pair each with a DAC such as the Auralic Vega.

NB
While tube amplifiers are noted as having great warmth (second order even harmonic distortion artifactor) they are not noted as having great specification.
Particularly, you will find they often have high (and low) frequency roll-off.
You'll find that audiophiles as a group, get brighter with age.
This is not to say that they are not (tube technology) capable of such. You will find radio transmitters as having used tubes, nuclear submarines, and should you survive until the end-of-days and have your own source of power, you may very well unlike your neighbours survive with a working music system.
Note: We use terms like CAD vs CDN to routinely imply we are being a "cad." The VK-150-SE is 150 watts, while the RACM is 90.

24|96
Can you get away with 24|96? Can you get away without it?
The audio poatstream is the rate at which you complain that your audio is not fine enough.
What is 24:96? It's 24-bit, 96 kHz processing.
What is processing? We'll the term should be rendering.
It's the speed at which your DAC spits out data but also the speed at which it processes (aka renders) it.
Sony invented the SACD format to allow for archival for audio information.
Should we be using a video term for an audio device? Tool, rather.
Of course we are talking about 24-bit, 98 kHz processing, but we use this to bring up a point. At what rate does your audio ... decay?

Can audio make you younger? They say sex does. That's despite le petite morte. Now audio may very well be the grey rejuvinator. They say audio makes you healthier, happier and they have music therapists in this position. When one thinks of Horus, however, and Egyptology, one thinks of age rejuvination.
In a book out of Classe, Merging Technologies introduces the NAS DAC. Audiophiles would agree that the perfect size of a DAC today - for the desktop - would be the Mac Mini!

Hedphone Update - 2.7
In our mind, nothing says both human drive and human idiocy than the cables of the Head Fi world today.
Man's will is a very fine thing. Man's logic is another thing unto that regard.
Let's look at the size of the connectors and the junctions. Is there honestly a need for two XLR connectors in a headphone cable? Yes, six lines is a very fine thing. There are six prongs in two XLR connectors. It's good to be grounded. It's good to be differential, for that matter. But what about the size?
Now let's look at this ViaBlue junction box. Is it to make one's penis look larger? Has anyone ever seen the size of wire in a voice coil?
Ok, we are seeing merely the Hot Rod mentality.
But these cables would be better used tying on a surf board to the top of your woodie (wood sided station wagon preferred by California surfers) than they would to your upper-end (non ubber-end) headphone set.
The HD 800 is a very fine thing. But can one not match they cables to the device? The HE-400i user likes the into the headphone look, so that cable is not a bad match, but look at the stupid Furez box.
The Hi Fi Man logo is stupid, for that matter. It would be better on a Mac Truck. We do like how in the photo, at least the angled gold bit, which was a recent change for Hi Fi Man, comes out. We've put this connector down, previously, for looking like a garden hose connector.
Now we quite like Hi Fi Man headphones. The HE 300. The HE 500. The HE 1000 is no headphone, but it is stunning audibly.
We haven't put in Audeze lately, but how about some Toxic Cables?
