Marantz HD-DAC1 Digital to Analgue Converter Review

The Marantz HD-DAC1 Digital to Analogue Converter ($799.00 USD) is not that different from devices of old. On the back, it is not that different from our Sony CDP-C79ES Compact Disc Changer ($590.00 USD), providing both variable and fixed out. The Digital Audio In component is not that different than that of the Sony TA-NE2000ESD Digital Preamplifier ($1,400.00 USD), with the addition of a USB input. On the front, there is an iPhone connector, and that is about that.

CS is another name for Computer Science, and CS 4398 might be an interesting course. It is interesting that Marantz doesn't use the leading DAC of today, ESS's 9018 Sabre. It's also interesting that Marantz manages to coax decent specifications out of the old Mothball.

Hi Fi is all about devices on the stack, and it's surprising that Marantz chose this route to the desktop computer market, when they had so many interesting Hi Fi Devices, in their stereo line.

How do you feel about 5.6 million. Could you make it with the Marantz? It has a star on the upper side of it's Port to remind you. Could this be your North Star, Leading the Way?

Hi Fi is about Art, and this art, we find abhorrent. The device. We do like the curved sides, however. Much nicer than the ES in the burl, and a nice patina to the front, also. The knob and porthole design is a travesty, and TEAC manages a much better job in the UD-501.

Should this be a model, it would be great.

Ok, how does this sound? Forget about how it looks. It's the sort of thing that would work with the AudioQuest Nighthawk ($699.00 USD).

In summary judgement, there is no problem with how the device looks in person, only that it is too large for the desk.
