We purchased two pairs in this review. $300.00 CDN + tax. $289.00 + tax. $631.00 CDN ($531.00 USD today).
In our mind, paired with a competent headphone amplifier, like the iFi Micro iDSD (or Micro iDAC), there is no better value-leader for the competent audiophile.
Read the reviews, and you'll find that the Stax 009 are the best headphones out today. You'll also see the Sennheiser HD-800 are very regarded uniquely well by the head-phones community. They both offer a tremendous amount of detail in very different perspectives. The 009 in musicality. The 800 in dimensional (360 degree) retrieval. You'll also find the Abyss AB-1266 ($5,495.00 USD) well regarded near the upper-reaches (pouring money into headphones can be an "abyss") along with the Audeze LCD-3 in musicality (warm, rough, no detail), and bass.
As for headphone amplifiers, the ALO Studio 6 ($3,900.00 USD) is well regarded for dynamic headphones, as is the iFi iCAN ($285.00 USD) in the lower-priced segment, or the upcoming Stax electrostatic amplifier, say, alternatively in our rarefied minds.
The AKG Q701 Headphone ($479.00 USD) is a value leader. You'll find them alternately listed at $199.00 USD, and available on Amazon.com.
