D5

Released in 1994, the D5 video format by Panasonic was used to record (and playback) quite a bit of HD content, much of which you likely saw. Like the D5, which helped increase broadcast television's resolution from 720 x 480 (480i NTSC) to 1920 x 1080 (1080/p HD) in terms of video,

and offered a lovely four 24bit / 48 kHz channels, or eight 20 bit / 48 kHz audio channels, accordingly,
the Raido D5 increased the effective audio resolution over the ceramic C4.1 accordingly.

In 2007 Panasonic introduced an add-on, allowing a D-5 to encode 2K (2048 x 1080) video using JPEG2000 wavelet-based compression.

Audio compression has been a wide subject of debate among the community. Some audiophiles prefer even loss-less compression to be abandoned, to avoid the processing necessary for decompression on playback.

Naturally, with both digital and analogue audio, some from of compression occurs, whether intentional or not.

Had the Raidho D5 been called the D4, we would have not had this discussion.
