Trends PA-10.1D Review - A Sterling Engine
We placed an Omega brochure behind the Trends PA-10.1D Headphone Amplifier unit to gaze at it. It's an X-Wing of sorts. R2D2 sits atop, alone - there is no place for Luke Sky-walker.
Every fair ground has it's chief attractions. The Omega brochure has its strap in the form of a roller coaster, or water slide, if you prefer. It's a chief image.
Everyone likes a D Cup.
The Trends PA-10.1D is a plucky one. We like the twin screws that adorn the side. It's line, black. In the rear, two sets of outs.
We connected it to two Parasound HCA-2200 II amplifiers and compared it with the Proceed AVP pre-amplifier to test it's dual-driver capability. It's a thing.
The hole is small, but nicely coiffured. Four black screws adorn the front. The volume control is a job.
It would be appropriate to compare it to the Job Pre.
The case is resonant and springy, but not overtly, musically, so.
The unit inside is fine.
The tube itself is old, but not overtly. It's what is called a NOS.
New, Old Stock.

When David Ho sent us his Trends, it was as if he sent his unit. The tube was thin, and brittle. The knob was slippery, and the hole was too small - for us.
We had written earlier that an Audiophile could collect all of the Trends units for Christmas, as a set, and play with them, at negligible cost. That's still it.
However, David did not produce the Trends PA-10.1D at no cost. It's a $300 unit (the same as a Gucci man's toque), and we do not know his unit - nor his delivery, cost.
To be fair, we purchased the HiFiMan silver-coated copper cable in 8M. ($100.00 USD) online. We also prudently purchased the iFI iDSD ($179.00 USD). To be it, we outfitted it with OSonic plugs, and 3" lengths.
We also established the HiFiMan HE-300 ($300 CDN) as the headphone to use, for review.
One of the rules in hi-fi is that everything must be kept, equal.

This review has been a heavy one. It takes a while for us to write a review. We promised David Ho a Stereophile.com quality review some time ago. The Trends PA.10.1D is a magnificent product. It has taken some time, but though the glow of it's tube, or rather, the light reflected by it, cast in a mercurial leaden Mithra sheen, it captured or caught our attention, full.
The dark walls of it's cavity. The solid front. The light reflected at it's top. It's a godda.
Get some Gouda instead. It's a good unit.
