The Theta Prometheus raises a good question. What is it about class D that has us leaning? At $12,000.00 USD / pair, that's almost twice as expensive (250W/channel), as the 1000W Anthem Statement M1. The question we have on our mind is whether Mark Levinson with it's No.53 (and by associative Virtue, Theta) did anything that Bruno Putzey's didn't with his Mola Mola box.
At 250 watts / channel, it's hardly more powerful than a traditional class AB amplifier like our rawdy Adcom GFA-555 II (200W / channel, $800.00 USD) that hardly gets any tracks, lately. At 250 watts, you can do very well in class A or AB typically with something like the Proceed HPA-2 ($3250.00 USD).
The Krell KSA-250 ($5700.00 USD) was the amp typically reigning in this category, with the Prometheus rising to the challenge. You'll also see the Pass X250.5 ($8250.00 USD) and Pass X250.8 ($9600.00 USD, high voltage) occupying this category, today.
As for the Prometheus (2015), we like it's remote, and find it a larger caricature of the Apple TV remote control. The box is ok, and the heat sink scheme is rather lovely. A bit like two katanas, and one cigar in demeanor.
How good are the Prometheus's watts? Well that's a good question. The price is in-line with Devialet ($17,495.00 USD 250), and you aren't limited to 24/192, going 'Pro. The NCore by Putzey's is about as good as it gets until recently.
You'll see the wave motif on the bottom of the remote, and on the front face (panel) of the main unit. We don't like the bit of lip that the unit, has however. The screws at the bottom and the back, look off. But, our main concern is the space under the bottom.
Prometheus was a good Aliens movie. There was a lot of anticipation, due to the fantastic trailer, and a lot of let-down in the theater.
Theta has a wonderful history in the Theatre. Their Casablanca was revered.
