The Shun Hana Limited Edition 8" Chef's Knife ($999.00 CDN) is a rather one of the most beautiful knives, in terms of blades (despite being mass-produced) we have seen.Like topography, down low, and flying paper clips, up top, it reminds us somehow of fields of grain, when seen in person.
We understand how a company like Shun goes to produce a series of editions; it must keep up, and remain interesting to the market. Like any Hi Fi manufactuer, from Germany or (Burnmeister) either, it does this .. kindly.
In person, we do not like the set of 8-rings (handle grip) on the bottom, and 5-rings (five) on the top.
Ah, it does remind us of an abacus, or our routine of weightlifting (or binary) in sets of eight. Or using every $5 bill for walking for beer (10 km) in our city.
In Vancouver, Ming Wo (www,mingwo.com), was selling this knife for $600.00 CDN and we could not believe the price, or the good - unprecedented - value.
Shun Knives, special editions, usually come with knife stands and such, and are sold at places like Williams-Sonoma.
It's rather difficult, like working with your retailer, who may only carry certain brands and editions (certain lines he is obligated or has arrangements with the manufacturer), and yet this retailer, Ming Wo, we have leanered is able and more so willing to bring what we desire.
We last, after missing out on being able to purchase the David Yurman Meotorite Bracelet ($9999.00 USD) in necklace (30", $30,000), braclet (9") and anklet (12", $20,000) form, settled for happily purchasing a single steak knife from there.
"Ah, no Ming Vase today, we though to ourselves. Let's go to Ming Wo(e)."
