The world's best headphone is widely regarded as the Stax 009. Entering into the foray is the HiFiMan HE 1000. We'll ignore the Abyss. Stax calls their headphones ear-speakers, and this HiFiMan HE 1000 model ($ USD) can rightly be called that. More so than headphones (they are too voiced as closed items) they can more rightly (in the manner of the famous Stax SR-Sigma Ear-Speaker / Headphone) be described as such. Listening to them, you will wonder what the nano-width transducer material can be done with as speakers.
To listen properly, you will need to fashion a headphone skirt. Note that the SR-Sigma are lifted at the ends, forming vertical triangles. Your HE 1000 will need to be lifted up, away from the ear, by 2-3" in a similar manner, however at the bottom.
Use with a very fine and revealing headphone amplifier. You don't want to waste this one, no matter how it looks like outside.
Have something constructed. For a temporary measure, take two miniature guitar stands and place them in a suitable manner.
