We'll agree with Apogee that the Aragon 4004 Mk II is a good amp. It's stunning in the bass. In fact, we've been waiting for a review of the Aragon 8008 to start. The 4004 worked amazingly, not only with the Scintilla, but with the famed B&W Matrix 801 Series 3, another notoriously difficult speaker to drive.
A contemporary variant of Apogee is Wisdom Audio. The Rush. In appearance, it resembles the Carver Amazing (Scintilla). scintillating.
Released in ..., the Apogee Scintilla had a stunningly low 79 dB efficiency. This made it amazing at you could drive it with a 60 W amp like the BAT VK-60, a 100 W amp (like the Krell KMA-100), or even a 200 W amp like the Aragon 4004 Mk II.
Of course to go with that legendary 79 dB efficiency was an impedance dip, as low as 1 Ω. We'd like more than one Omega, please, but of course that 1 Ω was actually nominal. How's that for striking the barrel? How low can you go? ... Drum roll, please.
The Apogee Scintilla went as low as ... ohm.
With that efficiency and magnitude, you could scintillate your victims. Your victims being your amps, or your friends.
Who wouldn't want a higher setup?
For that, there is both Wisdom, as we alluded, and Transmission, if you will give way for a long foot.
Audiophiles prefer a more direct approach.
The Kharma Grande Enigma would be the one to start, although that's just really a series of display cases, in effect.
Also scintillating about the Apogee is the frequency chart. At only 5 Hz up from 20, 25 makes a great audiophile start.
