Acoustat Spectra 11

Flash forward back to 1986, and you would have four years to save up for a pair of Acoustat Spectra 11 speakers.

That's $250/year, or $1000 over four years. Cash money. Just enough to get yourself a pair of mid-priced headphones, say, today.

Four years isn't today's typical savings plan. Back in the day, that was the length of time you would want on at most your mortgage.

Say, five years, if you were going to get one at all.

Today, 20-30+ years is typical, in common parlance, and loudspeaker prices have headed north of 500K.

Let's look at the data.

1986 - Sound Lab A3 - $5750/pair - www.soundlab-speakers.com

This is in the range of the B&W Matrix, a relative-reference speaker. You wouldn't pay much more.

1998 - Audio Artistry Beethoven - $28,000/pair - www.audioartistry.com

The finish is similar, and the drivers look copied. It's a cute speaker that would look good in your home.

2014 - Marten Coltrane Supreme 2 - $480,000/pair - www.marten.se

2014 - Magico Ultimate III - ~$600,000/pair - www.magico.net
