Totem Element Earth Whole Review - Hi Fi

As a loudspeaker, the Totem Element Earth is fantastic. With the Devialet D-240, it is an excellent introduction to Hi Fi. We also like the Fidelity Acoustics RFM-3 signature.

Compared to the Totem Element Metal, The Earth speaker offers better bass, and a more palpable acoustic presentation.

We listened to it at Hi Fi Center in Vancouver, in interested detail, late 2011. Vince Bruzzese was the presenter for their Listen Up! session..To wax poetically about the introduction of the Element Earth and the D-Premier, they were the first products that improved the hi fi landscape since the 1970's.

They deserve your full interest, if you are interested in high fidelity.

Let us speak of the Totem Element Earth only. It's a worthwhile proposition.

We see three faults with this loudspeaker.

1. Build
2. Design
3. Price

You may strike this loudspeaker off your list if any is an issue.

It is not an issue for us.

The build on the loudspeaker is shoddy. By this I mean that it fails to exhibit an inert cabinet, and proper floor balance.

Totem Element Earth - Initial Version (note phase-plug).
It's the sort of loudspeaker that a MD would likely purchase.

Listen Up! Vancouver, Canada
It's aesthetically unpleasing. The sound however, is excellent, and captivating. Looking at our Sennheiser IE 800 review, I see that we award the Earth 1/2 the value - that's something.

At $8995.00 retail CDN, it's over-priced by a factor of 10, in our estimation. The Torrent driver is described as resembling a Rolex, however a visual inspection reveals the quality of the metal-work to be inferior to a similarly priced steel Rolex Submariner (basic).

Rating: 70/100
Value: 10/100

You won't hear the detail of a B&W 800 (Diamond), however you will hear the music. We find no fault with the designer. It does include an excellent set of binding posts, located at back. Courtesy of WBT and Totem Acoustic, Inc. Good speaker.

We wish Ikea would buy it from Totem, make it a kit, and sells oodles of em. That would be a great way to get this hobby goin' at an impaction retail level. A loudspeaker of this quality needs to reach masses, if it is to improve.

As it is, it's just good enough to buy.

Speaking frankly, making yourself the listener, you would hope that your home audio loudspeaker would do more. But, as a speaker, if you are enthusiastic about the music, it is enough of a loudspeaker.

It doesn't cost much. About $30,000. A first year's wage.

Total Points: 80/200

  2. Opinions Vary. Pretty clear you lack experience as an audiofile. Probably don't own a Rolex to make a good comparison. Pretty biased review, inaccurate as a whole, and lacking an artful eye.

  3. Thanks, Signal 4.

Opinions vary. In my city, watches like the basic Rolex are typically worn by small hard-working types. An owner of a failing juice bar, or a Revenue Canada accountant.
    Nice guys, but don't admire.

Or necklaces like John Hardy with stone. Worn by poor cafe owners. Admirable items - would buy, but wouldn't wear for the connotation. Not stellar.

Don't mind the Rolex watch types. Have a friend with a large collection, up to pre-baguette models, more little stones. Large watch safe needed for this endeavour. Part of me thinks this is no more than collecting socks, intrinsically / extrinsically - pleasant but trife.

Some of the aftermarket versions - hand engraving, blackout, and dial modifications are interesting.

    I just wear a Boss.

Basic models boring due to the perpetuation.

Reading back, I can see the basic point of the review was that about $30,000 should be spent on suitable home loudspeaker for hi fi, today.

That was not the point of the review, but the conclusion on reviewing the Totem product.

80 points out of 200 is pretty good for the Totem product. As a $900 product, it would be something.

    Cool name, btw.

  4. Lol, what a ridiculously poor and badly written 'review'. No mention of any kind of music played whatsoever or any of the strengths of these speakers, thankfully most people who are interested in hifi and loudspeakers probably won't be taking much notice of this piece of, (and I use the term loosely) journalism.
