We had a different name for this, which we wrote in our heads, but it'll have to come back to us before we go further.
The Quandary is this.
Why is the DAC, the product with the most technological obsolescence (and thus economic throw-away value), the highest price? :)
It is self evident writing this, what is the answer.
To have a decent headphone system (today), the DAC would be the MSB Select DAC ($ USD).
The amplifier would be iFi Pro iCAN ($1,699.00 USD) of equivalent specification.
The headphone would be the Stax 009 Electrostatic Earspeaker ($3,825.00 USD).
There are of course some integrated solutions, with amazing expectations:
1) The Sennheiser .. ($ USD)
2) The Hi Fi Man ($ USD)
In both of these, they have thrown away the question of the DAC, and focused on the electronics - or at least the acoustics - or both.
Actually, two DAC's well worth considering are the
1) Lampzator Golden Gate ($ USD)
2) Triangle DAC ($ USD)
Or, you can settle in on the Hegel Super (-140 dB), if you forget to drop the soap! :)
