Boulder and Chairo

Elements of Computer Music
F. Richard Moore

We haven't met a loudspeaker we've liked the look of more since encountering the Chairo Academy Serendipity loudspeaker.Perhaps it's that it looks a bit like a wife... There's the skirt, or bustle at the bottom - it stands rather well - not at all over-bearing, like a Benesch Cardinal.

The frequency response is outstanding. To a solid 23 Hz on the bottom end, and an honest cabinet design, with solid wood finishing - no veneer, here, also. And a propper 400W at 4Ω power suggestion to go with honest, interesting drivers, reminding of us when we first saw Marten's Coltrane, and, we're smitten.

Chairo Academy Serendipity Pair
We've been to Boulder, Colorado. The outskirts at least. Nice place, Colorado.

Visited Channelpoint (the remnants of a Sun research team who liked Colorado). Smart guys. Some nice ones, too. One of them had written a book we liked and had picked up in Stanford - "Elements of Computer Music" - Richard Moore.

Now back to the Boulder 3060. It's a gorgeous amplifier we hadn't seen the need for, previously - especially the 3050. We rather liked the 2050, and thought it special.

Boulder 3060 - Open Top

Put the 3060 on a red carpet, and peer inside closely, and you'll begin to see what makes it special. To begin with, it looks a bit in construction like the bridge of a Star-Destroyer. It's a bit had to get excited by the insides of an system like the Naim Statement, when you've seen a Solution. Not so, the 3060. It's exciting, even on it's own.

For extended frequency response (18-100000 Hz +-2dB), partner it with something like the Marten Coltrane Supreme 2, for an Imperial Dreadnaught, the Polymer Audio Master, generous loudspeaker, or stick with your Serendipity.

We like the Chairo Serendipity loudspaker as the first dynamic driver system to practically and aesthetically match the Sanders Sound System Electrostatic 10C, in terms of traditional hi-fi.

Speaking of C, we were disappointment Richard Moore wanted to talk Objective-C, and not computer music.

What a trip.

Only lasted 2 days. Ok 3. Saw Vail. Should of known by his name - But man, what work!

Boulder 3060 - Inside Back

The Boulder 3060 is a generous stereo amplifier, with 900W on tap. At a price equivalent to 430W of Solution 700. $115,000 USD.

Back-story.

We flew in under the snow, from Denver, into Colorado Springs airport at the outskirts, and had a rent-a-car waiting. Avis - good mid-size US car, nice driving. Got lost in the snow, and up a new sub-division. Great fun. Made it to our Embassy Suites hotel safely in the boring part of town, and asked for directions "what do people do in this town for fun" at the close-by Appleby's.

Was meeted+ with chagrin by the hostess - learned later that Colorado Springs is home to Focus on the Family and four other Christian-right groups who we now admire but then looked at with awe and fear - gun / cult guys we thought - Scientologists on acid et. al. - and discovered that Americans eat humongous portions of food - the size of their plates is about 2-3 times larger than standard, and each one of two sides, is the size of a standard plate.

Visited the Colorado Springs hi-fi dealers on Day 3, after discovering that the downtown is a bit like Victoria, BC, only smaller, and economically depressed, circa 2000. But, they had Boulder! :) How's that? Something high-end, and unique to the area - people must be rich out these parts, we thought, to afford $40,000 components, and up.The dealers were nice, but there were depressed farm-style houses on the same street - very small central-city. Great Italian restaurant, though - bring in Chairo! Once we had found parking on night 2, after having a real-estate tour of 3 homes, and a great passage through "Garden of the Gods" in fresh snow - seeing that our BC mountains were really only foot-hills compared to Colorado, and passed ourselves along the depressed central-city. They liked to mountain-bike, watch American padded sock-em-up, install speakers in their ceilings, and pro-create, we figured.

+ should be met, but since the industry term is "meeter", we choose meeted
